Anthias
Anthias
Ventralis anthias - This type of anthias is pretty hard to come by...(at least its the second time I've seen them in Southern Cal over the last three years). They are found from a deeper region of the reef so the water temp must be kept slightly lower that usual. Supposedly more difficult to acclimate to typical strong lighting of a reef tank. I've been lucking so far, all three swam out into the open after two days. The one on top in the first picture is a male, the other two are females.
Sunburst or Fathead anthias - The price of this anthias has come down quite a bit over the last two years. First time I seen it was around three years ago. The LFS wanted $65 each. Now, they are about $30-35. In my experience, most of them are very shy. The first two successful ones I've kept were living in my 5g nano tank. Both only ate golden pearls. No flake, frozen cube, or even live brine tempted their appetite. A deterioration in water quality proofed detrimental when I lost both at the same time after 1 1/2 year. This new Sunburst is in my main tank for about a month. Very shy, but is braver every day as it ventures out further from its hiding cave.
