Canopy
Canopy
I made the original canopy with gull-wing flip tops. The gull-wing design had full access on either side when flipped up. But it was quite heavy when opening and closing. In the new canopy, I incorporated eight doors. The opening of the canopy was designed to be close to flush with the tank top. This made it even more accessible to maintainence than before. The new canopy was build out of 3/4" birch plywood. It has a total of four 4" A/C fans. The ones on the side turns on with the first two metal halides. The top two turns on when the second set of metal halides come on. Two of the round holes on the edge is for the wiring to enter and the middle one is for additional water return. The canopy was built using standard cabinet face-frame method. After it is done, I painted the inside with three coats of 2-part epoxy to seal out moisture, then outside is stained and varnished. I built the door with solid birch stock, jointed and planed. Cutting the styles and rails for the eight doors of the canopy was the most time consuming portion of this project.
